Sad date

Our date was rather sad... -_-
We talked too much about my xbf. I seemed to hurt him more than once today... I really didnt mean to.
Sometimes I wonder if honesty is really something good. I know I wasnt cruel, but is there a kind way to tell your boyfriend you still love your exboyfriend?
We had a lil fight before that... It wasnt a fight actually. To sum it up, he wanted to be alone with me and I didnt want that.
So he was already hurt (I guess I hurt his pride or something?), we were rather quiet and he was playing with my hands. Then he started playing with my ring - my xbf's ring - and he was about to take it off but I didnt let him
He asked if I still love the xbf, I said yeah, he asked why am I dating him then...
We didnt really fight, but he looked tired/sadish and I didnt know what to do or say. Now I am sad and tired.
Why is everything so difficult?
